It’s the most wonderful time of year again…We shellebrated the holidays the weekend at the Captiva Golf Cart Parade with fabulous floats!
Since the parade began in 2009, I’ve been decorating our Junonia Jalopy to take part in this quirky Christmas ritual… but not this year. This year I was honored to be a judge. But I couldn’t be just any judge- I had to break out a shell or two and decorated myself as a ShellElf to help NBC2 news anchor Kellie Burns and writer Steve Winston of WorldPropertyJournal.com judge the cutest little parade on the planet.
I wish you could have seen these carts in person because they looked so much more amazing than the pictures but The Snowflakes were creative, frosty, sparkly and bright.
They won first prize for Non-Commercial decorated golf cart. They were so stinkin cute!
The local Remax offices are currently under construction so this team of realtors got really creative to decorate their golf cart float as The Grinch with construction tape and hard hats in colorful Christmas colors. They even had a dog with one antler- lol. The Grinch would be proud!
The Grinch mobile deservingly won first prize in Commercial category.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Bubble Room’s Ginger Bread House roll down the street. Yes, there was really a golf cart under this candy house made mostly of colorful paper plates. Awesome!
They won Best In Show! These are the adorable Bubble Room girls who made this amazing golf cart the overall winners of the parade.
It was not easy being judge since there were so many other whimsical and creative golf carts…
After watching theses crazy carts float around Captiva Island, then watching the wacky awards ceremony, we all enjoyed merry cheer as the sun went down and the streets lit up with Luminary Festivities .
Our friends Louis and Nancy from our home town of Virginia Beach came for their second year to spend an Island Christmas in paradise with us. Being a part of such silliness, they want to come back next year too.
Since The Grinch didn’t want to steal this Christmas this year, The ShellElf steals a smile.
Shellers loved the parade too! I saw local sheller Jim rejoicing in the fun… while we talked about shelling our local beaches. He’s been finding lots of good shells at Gulfside City Park too and the same as me… he has been seeing Blind Pass and the Lighthouse beach a “hit or miss” these days. As we both said… ‘You never know what your gonna find until you get there!”.
This sweet little parade would never have been possible if it weren’t for the sponsorship of Royal Shell Companies so you may have wondered why these nutty Nut Cracker Carts didn’t win anything… we couldn’t vote on our sponsor. But YOU get to vote for any cart you want because there is one more category that needs to YOUR VOTE…
YOU get to choose the Peoples Choice Award! You can see all of the floats from the parade and vote for your favorite one. CLICK HERE to choose your fave! (or https://www.facebook.com/captivagolfcartparade).
The island Shellebrations have begun!
Come join us for our Shelling Adventure on Sight Sea-R cruise on Wednesday December 10, 2014 to Big Hickory Island. We should find plenty of holiday gifts from the sea on the island from these north winds that have been blowing- weehoo! CLICK HERE for more info and future dates.
Pam – So happy to see your post. I can’t believe we didn’t get to see the parade. I had an accident and had to nurse a head injury. Everything ok but we are so sorry we missed the fun. As you would say, that parade is “stinkin fun”!!! Great seeing you Friday night at Luminary. Hope to see you again in the Spring!
Oh nooo Penny! You looked so beautiful at the Sanibel luminary- so good to see you, I was looking forward to seeing you again in Captiva. I hope you are ok now!
I love this post! That gingerbread house–wow! You look like Cindy Lou Who standing next to the Grinch! Adorbs!
These golf carts put some of our Mardi Gras floats to shame. What fun!!!
Looks like the weather was perfect.

Looks like lots of fun and definitely something we want to experience!
I hope our plane is able to take off OK at noon today from New York City as we are in the middle of a Nor’easter. No snow, but very heavy rain and strong winds.
Fingers crossed that we can get to Sanibel more or less on time!
I think the floats get better each year. Looks like such a fun time!
I wish I was there so badly! It’s cold here in MN and no shells! :( love your post! Love the floats. How fun! Sherri from MN
I forgot to add that you look adorable, too!!!
Sounds (and looks) like it was a blast! I love your fabulous shell-elf costume-the hat is hilarious! Thanks for your bright and cheery posts while it’s cold and dreary here!
