“Lots of fun looking and were rewarded with quite a few doubles and many halves! We love shelling!! :-)” -from Tina
She found these ROSE PETAL TELLINS yesterday evening. I don’t find these very often- mostly on sand bars and sand flats on Lover’s Key in Bonita Beach or North Capitva . Please let us know where you found them , Tina, when you get a chance (Sanibel?). Shell crafters love these shells since they are so colorful and larger than the colorful COQUINA. Great finds!
Hi Pam,
we found these at the East end of Sanibel, yesterday! Didn’t make it back down there today!!!!
Ooh…lucky you for such great finds:)
Nice!
These pairs of Rose petal tellins, http://shellmuseum.org/shells/shelldetails.cfm?id=242 are a nice find. I have only ever found pairs of them on the bay side of Sanibel and Captiva islands, usually on intertidal sand exposed at low tide. They must be far more plentiful in that habitat than on the gulf side, which usually has more wave action and less mud/organic debris. In any case, many people do not realize that Rose petal tellins are not all dark pink, but can be several colors, from pure white to white with orange/pink blush or rays to completely dark pink, as in Tina’s picture. To illustrate the variable coloration of these nice bivalves, here is a link to a picture of some of these shells that my wife and I collected this February, http://shells.sanibelsanddollarc201.com/RosePetalTellins.html
Wow, I’ve only found one in years of shelling!
