Grrrrrr. Bonnie took a big bite out of the beach at Blind Pass. We knew this could be a possibility with her east winds but…. come on! She barely gave us enough rain to water my yard. Oh well, the sand will fill back in and the shells will be back in no time. This is how I see it….. The churning gulf water dislodged my junonia and it’s rolling on the gulf floor right now towards our islands and will wash up on the beach at my feet next week.
I didn’t have luck any where else o the beaches either. Anybody else?
WOW!
WOW, sure hope the beach comes back before my December trip! And brings my Junonia too!! That doesn’t look so good!
Aww poor Blind Pass :( I went shelling tonight on Naples beach during the sunset and found my first Olive and my first (Nutmeg, Cantharus or Nassa, I don’t know which it is just yet)! I managed to find TONS of Worm shells and Augers too. I made a great haul tonight. I will post pictures later on my blog, If you can identify some that would be awesome! (i also bought a Seashell book at B&N today that helped me a great deal in my hunt; Florida’s Seashells: A Beachcomber’s Guide by Blair and Dawn Witherington)…Hope Blind Pass brings you more shells soon!!
Thank you so much for the update,we were curious what Blind Pass was looking like, soon we’ll be down. We’re also going to check out Little Hickory, maybe between both places we’ll find some nice shells. It’s still beautiful though :)
OMG. Mother Nature musta been mad. I hope the sand is back soon. They don’t do beach renurishment on Sanibel and Captiva, do they?
Yes, we still have beach renurishment but we won’t need it for this. This is just normal sand movement. It will come back pretty quickly. No worries.
I’m here and having no luck!! Crisis! Do you think shelling here would have any correlation to Little Hickory? I may drive down there.
Don’t forget to look on the bay side too. I’m going to try to go further down on the pier side of the east end this afternoon. Fingers crossed for you!!!! Good luck!
oh wow, that storm took alot of that shell pile didnt it.
geez now that i look at it, doesnt seem like there are any shells, just sand. :(
Pam, what shells are most common for you on west gulf drive?
I’ve found of my little candy corn along West Gulf Drive but as you know, it changes every day. Check out some other posts about West Gulf Drive. http://iloveshelling.com/blog/category/sanibel/west-gulf-drive-sanibel/
Good luck McKenzie!
thanks soo much pam!!!! your awesome!!!
So sad about the beach. My husband was relieved to see the shelling was disappointing after the storm, BECAUSE, he literally made me leave ahead of Bonnie!!!! I did, but under great protest!! Wish I was still there. Love your site and look at it everyday. Terri in Texas, but will return!
The shells are (were) there! Went shelling at low around the evening low tide on Sunday, had to dig in the surf, but we found countless olives, and periwinkles! Some murex (apple, and a big lace!) and many others…we also dug up 2 (yes 2!) big, live lightning welks…it’s hard to feel bad about putting the live ones back!
Oh my gosh! fantastic! Where oh where did you find all of these goodies?? Yep, I have a disappointing moment (just a moment) when I find a big shell then see that it’s alive, then it’s a celebratory release for its happy and healthy life. Go back to the sea and breed baby, breed!
We will be about there this time next week, and hope to have good shelling on westgulf. If you have any suggestions, I will be watching this every day until then. Thanks, Tara
