We left the beach empty handed tonight but as you see it was beautiful on the east end of Sanibel……although, I heard more than once that last night was even more beautiful. Several people told me that as the sun was setting, the full moon was rising over the water AND at the same time……a rainbow! Really??? We missed it!
Local artist Luc and Dee told me about the sky we missed last night and that they found a live ALPHABET CONE last night too right around the same area we were standing. So lo and behold, as I was wading through the water to catch up with Clark to leave…..I saw a live alphabet cone. It had to be the same one.
You can barely see him but I saw his tracks in the shallow water so I knew he was alive. I picked him up (they aren’t poisonous) only long enough to take the picture and show Clark then put him back where we found him. That was like finding a needle in a haystack to find the same cone! It makes me feel a little better about missing the moon and rainbow show last night (just a little).

Oh, you didn’t leave the beach empty handed; you had the beautiful photos that you took!! Thanks so much for sharing your empty handedness!!! :) Best Wishes, Dovie
It was well worth coming away empty handed after the beautiful sunset and shell you saw. Beautiful!
I am either too old or too crazy! When I found your blog at the end of june, I was so excited and bookmarked it immediately. It was June 30. So, everytime I came to read your words and see your pics…there was never a new post. I was sad. UNTIL THIS MORNING WHEN IT DAWNED ON ME THAT I HAD BOOKMARKED THE JUNE 30 ENTRY….so of course, that’s what came up on my screen. sheesh……..alzheimers kicking in! SO>>>how happy I am now that I realize what I’ve done and have a whole month to catch up on, on your blog!!!
sigh………….just call me a crazy cruisin’ chick!!
Oh, that sunset! It’s gorgeous…as is the alphabet cone!
It’s great to see the locals enjoying our beaches…
Nothing, absolutely nothing, like a SANIBEL SUNSET!!!!!!!!!
Can I ask a question…I thought in a Jan. post you had said alphabet cones were poisonous and we were also told that by our fishing guide when on Sanibel (we had found a live one and picked it up as well and left of course). Can you clarify this issue for me!!??? Thanks…oh and gorgeous as always!
Yes, I did say that in January and I thought that I had a comment from an expert on that post that corrected me. I just looked back…nope nothing (I’ll correct that- thank you!). I found the comment from another post from our expert MurexKen that says our local cones aren’t poisonous. Check it out http://iloveshelling.com/blog/2010/05/25/the-gulf-is-alive-and-well/ . I found other resources that have said they are poisonous but I trust MK’s advice.
I think I’ve found him, too! That alphabet is a tease!
I’m getting conflicting information about the cone shells. Everything I’ve read says they are all poison every type of them. I’m wondering about it cause I love beachcombing and just don’t want a fear to hinder my new hobby.
Cones are poisonous to their predators but most are not deadly poisonous to humans. There are only a few that are poisonous (deadly) to humans and they arent the ones we can find in SouthWest Florida.
