I’ve had a little dry spell finding mid size shells lately but today…. The shells are back! Yippee! We had nice southwest winds the past few days and now the shells at the lighthouse beach on the pier side have started rolling in, baby.
I knew it was gonna be a good day today since I found a CRUCIFIX SHELL (which is really not a shell- click HERE or on the name for more info). It’s a good luck charm!
It’s a great day when you find a KINGS CROWN and a red TRUE TULIP!
I saw quite a few pairs of SUNRAY VINUS CLAMS that were still together. Lucky again!
This gorgeous LIGHTNING WHELK rolled up on the beach just waiting to be picked up by a lucky sheller.
This was a lucky shelling family enjoying gulf treasures washing up with every handful. They were having a blast! And me too!
Check out those beauties. Okay, I know you didn’t miss that butterscotch yellow TRUE TULIP sittin’ pretty in the middle of all those other shellicious shells, did you?
In with the shells, came live SEA CUCUMBERS, STARFISH and a few SEA URCHINS. James was a good sheller and gently returned this live sea critter to the water to help it survive. What a cutie!
I’m sure you can identify most of these shells but I’m especially tickled by the bright orange CHESTNUT TURBAN and the little candy HORSE CONCH. There is another shell I’m also pretty tickled with but it’s broken. It is the second one down on the right side…….it’s a CARRIER SHELL! I didn’t get a good shot of it so maybe I’ll show you tomorrow if I can get a good picture. Don’t know all the other names all of the shells above? Try looking at my SEASHELL IDENTIFICATION page. Good luck ….. Tag! You’re it! I’ve now passed my good luck from finding that CRUCIFIX SHELL today on to you. Have fun.
I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I was wondering about that south wind. It was blowing up here in Englewood too. There were quite a few shell piles on Stump Pass but not many keepers. The water is starting to warm up a tad. I took MK’s tip about the area above the pier and found lots of rose petal Tellins. I noticed the noseeums are back so I have my Cutter back in my beach bag.
Kaybe,
You mentioned the noseeums are back. Which time of the year would be the best to visit in order to avoid these nasty little critters, and still be able to get some good shelling in? I always get attacked terribly by them and would prefer to avoid most of them if possible.
Thanks,
Deb
Hold on south wind….I will be there Saturday! Save some whelks for me!
Great shells! Wish I were (I dream of) Jeanie and I could “blink” myself to Sanibel :-D I especially love the color on that King’s Crown–absolutely beautiful. Keep posting pics for us poor slobs who don’t even have a trip on the horizon….I gotta get busy on that one!
Nice shells. I saw the waves pounding the shore on the Pointe Santo Webcam and I was wondering about the shelling. Looks like it was better than I thought it would be. I can’t wait to get down there!
Gorgeous shells! I have to wait another 104 days until my visit (but who’s counting?!). What type of shells may I expect in July? I’m still learning the art of shelling :)
Sun, sand and seashells… Oh, how I wish I was there!
My heart quickened when I saw all those shells in your strainer. That is my shelling fantasy–to scoop up those beauties. I’ll be on Sanibel in May. Hope those winds stir up some great finds while I’m there.
It’s been a week of wonderful “early” AM shelling. So sad to be leaving tomorrow. I’ll be living through your site until next year. Thanks for the great pics and info.
Nice winds down your way? We had NASTY winds in Tampa Bay today; 50–70mph and numerous tornados touched down. It’s a real mess, but no rain tomorrow and low tide is at 7:46am. If I can get past the downed trees and power lines, I just may check out the beach and see what the wind blew in. There’s got to be a big payoff for being scared all day, lol.
No sharks teeth have been up here either so maybe some bad weather will bring us some. Was in Jacksonville over the weekend and found a really big sharks eye, finger size perfect olive and some nice sharks teeth..Good beach glass too.
Ooohhh, beach glass! I do miss finding that colorful tumbled glass.
Pam…I’ve been going to Sanibel for years summer, spring, winter and fall…the last year or so the shelling has been sad.I read your website and wonder where you find all these shells.I do lighthouse beach and pier, the pass, bowmans and every where inbetween and still dont find the shells as in years past…was there this wkend 4/2 and 4/3…nothing as you say
Krista,
I am not the only one finding shells…. as I show in my photos. The past few weeks before this post weren’t great shelling because of the east winds but This weekend (4/2 and 4/3) was AWESOME shelling at the lighthouse so I’m not sure where you were and what you were looking for. It’s all a treasure hunt….. and some times I think “why can’t I find my junonia?” but then I see a shell like that true tulip and I am happy.
I have tried to find Sharon Thomas to see if she sells her flower shell creations. Does anyone know how I can reach out to her? or find her? Thanks
