After almost 2 days of high north/west winds, I bundled up in my warmest clothes then hit the 45 degree beach this morning. I know some of you are experiencing much lower temps than that ….. but geeez….the wind chill was killer. My finger tips almost froze off! This poor guy was not too happy either rolling in the surf but he was still healthy and kicking.
I was a little surprised but there was only a few left over shells at the jetty rocks on Captiva…
One side of the sand bar in the pass had a few COCKLES and CALICO SCALLOPS…
The other side had no shells but still had a beautiful view…
Then I went home. Late this afternoon, I couldn’t stand it. I went back to Blind Pass to scout out the beach again thinking the shells were finally coming in.
Not yet still! But I did find Susan from Fort Walton Beach, FL. She found a few treasures including this double ALTERNATE TELLIN…
There were a few LETTERED OLIVES, FIGHTING CONCHS and COCKLES to brighten the day. I also saw lots of HORSE CONCH EGG CASES…
Tomorrow, the mercury will start to rise. Oh thank goodness. And maybe we’ll see some shell piles too!
thats the beauty of shelling, theres always tomorrow!
Yes! There’s always tomorrow… but enjoy what you find today.
Coming to visit this weekend…I’m sooooo excited…we will have a great time I know!!!! Weather is always changing…hope to see you Pam on the beach…
I always say even finding nothing at the beach is better than a good day anywhere else. It’s always amazing how it changes from day to day.
Yeah, I was totally disappointed early this a.m., too. I went to four locations to check out the beaches in the darkness and ALL I could find to keep, was a zigzag scallop. Better luck to all of us tomorrow!
Boca Grande had a nice shell pile last Thursday night so I went back out tonight thinking surely there must be a mother lode from the winds….. nuthin! It was 43 degrees but at least no wind blowing. I’m hoping for something on Bowman’s when I come down for the Stoop on Friday.
I saw the northwest winds and was actually in my truck ready to drive across from Deerfield beach- as I was filling up at the station I thought better of my plan – since I was donned in my summer atire -shorts and a t-shirt!
I was just on Delray Beach. Are there any good shelling beaches over your way? I saw a lighthouse point on Deerfield but didn’t make it out there.
Cold winds and frozen fingers on Sanibel!?…..For those of us stuck up here in this yucky Ohio Winter, I’ll confess……. knowing it is cold there does take off a bit of the edge of not being there on the Island! But…I’m still wishing you warmer weather and sun filled days! No reason all of us have to suffer Winters cold shrug! Happy Shelling!
Beautiful scenes! Love the footprints (shoeprints) in the sand!
I love the mustard colored sky in the last photo! Brrrr, enough with the cold.
I can imagine it gets pretty cold on the beach with the winds coming off the gulf. I’d brave it tho! LOL!
Yeah! I can’t believe how cold it is on Sanibel! I looked at the weather report for Sanibel this morning… and I thought it must be an error!
It’s 43º here right now in NYC! 45 is really cold for shelling!!! I’m impressed with you Pam! Beautiful photos despite your frozen fingers!
It is bizarre that it is that cold there. We had light ice/snow in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area last night but can not complain about the winter…very mild for us!!
We will be there in late April and hope to run into you, Pam, on the beach with our lighted “I love shelling” caps which were a Christmas gift from our daughter and family. They joined us in Sanibel at Pointe Santo during Columbus Day and loved it! We went for 2 weeks and stayed 4 weeks!! We try to come there ever 3-4 months.
We lived in Florida for years and miss it!
We will move back one day… but it is hard to leave the grand kids right now…when they are just a little older we know they will want to come stay with us when ever they can!!!
Our hearts are on the beach in Sanibel.

Well, I’m happy to say that I thought the shelling on Sanibel beach was fabulous today… nothing too fancy, but I did find several pretty nice paper figs, yippee! And although it was chilly at first, by late afternoon, it had warmed up nicely. Lots of egg casings, and starfish! I’ve never had any luck finding starfish, but today there were loads of them, but all of them live… and I threw them back in the surf. Also saw a wonderfully playful dolphin frolicking to and fro, giving us a show. I ended the day with a Pina Colada and some Ahi Tuna at the “Island Cow”. Perfect! I’ll be back tomorrow!
I think ‘the Cow’ is my favorite place to eat on the island. Everything is good. We’ve got one month to go before we are there too. Enjoy!!!
Hi Pam, I feel your pain with those temps. Last week I went shelling on Newport, RI & froze my (…uh, nope it’s still there) off. But I went from beach to beach. Wish I was at the shellabration. Thanks so much for the video! Great job!
Happy Shelling on valentines day
That’s the way ALL of my trips (3) to Sanibel/Captiva have been….no shells. :-(
Thanks for the Beautiful pics :) Does this NW Pa. girl good to see them.

One week from today!!!! And with 17 degrees here near Chattanooga, I’m READY!! My niece Loni (who lives on Sanibel) and I will be helping with the shell crafting week-end….soooooo looking forward to be there.
