Quick update… I stopped at Tarpon Bay Rd public beach access today just to see if these NW winds brought us some shelling treasures. Yes- The beach was loaded with fun piles to pick through and more in the water!
This next photo is from yesterday and the shells were in the water at Blind Pass and just a few scattered on the beach. But I’m sure today they have made it on to the beach but I didn’t have time to check. I’d say if you are in southwest Florida, check out the closest beach to you- it will probably have some seashell treasures! I’ll post more pics soon but wanted to give you an update ASAP.
You guys have really had good winds bringing in all the treasures to the beach .I am just so anxious to get back down to Sanibel .Last evening Roy and I made our reservations at the Island Inn…Can not wait until June. Have enjoyed all your cybershelling, keeping us sharp! Thanks Pam

If i start driving now, do you think they’ll still be there when I get there?? I miss Sanibel terribly :(
Me too, even though I just got back from Nevis. If you love shells, there’s nowhere like Sanibel. It’s Shellibel. Maybe it’s Shellorama… Plus it is so extremely beautiful in so many ways, apart from the shells!
Wow. My local beach has lots and lots of shells but I don’t think I have ever seen so many shells on a beach like this.
We are at Pointe Santo for spring break and found a banded tulip, several lightning whelks, a pear whelk and even two small junonia pieces!
Live on the east coast….on our beach, we do find occasional shells and sea glass. Last month, I was lucky enough to come across a beautiful “paper nautilus”. Also, a message in a bottle !
Although hard to leave Sanibel, it is great to have a beach to go to when we return home!
Oooo, I would love to find a paper nautilus! I did once find a message in a bottle, years ago. What did yours say?
This message in a bottle was from Melbourne, FL and was found in Gulf Stream, FL (Delray Beach). Go on “Coastal Star Newspaper Ocean Ridge and go onto photos (Joan Lorne) and you can read the contents. !!!!! Lucky Day.
We have yet to find a paper nautilus! wow-congrats!
I have a collection of about 10. Want to see photos? Where would I send them to you ?
Oh please post photos at many angles of paper nautilus! Would it be ok if an illustrator I’m working with on a beach combing project used them as reference…? I will credit you if you want to share your name (and the photos!)
I am so looking forward to coming to Sanibel, I can’t wait to dig my hands into the shell piles and see what I can find.
Pam, you must have amazing self-control to be able to leave the beach without doing some shelling. I try so hard, but when we’re there, my “I just want to take a quick look” means “I might be back in an hour…”
Finding a Paper Nautilus here on the east coast of Florida is like finding a Junonia on the west coast of Florida !!!!!
