A STARFISH can be tumbled by the sea so roughly to lose an arm or two but can pull himself back together by re-growing those broken limbs. They can also endure tidal changes that leave them stranded on the beach with little water at low tide. They are survivors! I watched oodles of these survivor SEA STARS use their TUBE FEET to scoot around the tidal pools and upright themselves after a wave turned them upside down. They even use those TUBE FEET for feeding and breathing so even though they might not look like they are alive, if they are anywhere near the water they have a chance to survive. (OMG That PELICAN photobombed my STARFISH picture! LOL)
I was so amazed by the movement of a couple of these very frisky critters, I took a little video to share the awesomeness. Enjoy the YouTubeFeet video- heehee.
PS- Along with the new cruise schedule I mentioned on my last post, don’t forget we are still on schedule for our super fun get-together on Captiva Cruises.
We have an iLoveShelling boat cruise for shelling on Cayo Costa this Friday June 6, 2014 at 1 pm. Join us!
He looks like he’s ready to give you a hug!
He was coming right for me like he DID want to hug me. I kept on having to back up since he was coming right for me. so cute!
Loved that video of the sea star!
AMAZING … Loved the video.
I love that first pic of the starfish. May I ask what setting you used on your Lumix for that picture? I just bought a Lumix a month ago and still getting used to all the different settings and what they do.
Hi Nikki! I always use the automatic setting (iA)- I hate to mess with changing settings- that’s why I love that camera. I download them into iPhoto where I lighten and crop.
I just LOVED that first photo!
We are coming next month and I can’t wait! This will be our kids first time on Sanibel and they are going to love the tide pools and all the live sea life!
Have you checked to see what time of day the lowest tides are while you will be on Sanibel? And how low those low tides are?
Pam has a super-handy tide table here on the blog, click the button at the top of this page where it says TIDES.
But maybe you know all that already :)
Gorgeous footage of the sea star(s) in motion!
Loved the star fish video, but especially loved the upbeat music you had with it. Would you care to share the name of it?
Thanks! I do all of my videos in iMovie. Its iMovie music.
Love starfishes. Lovely pictures.
Really cool – you can really see his legs moving at one point.
Wonderful video of these fascinating starfish, Pam. Looks very professional! We just got back from Belize and my husband got wonderful underwater videos with his new gopro camera.
Awesome video! It drew me right down to the beach. Thank you for posting. Oh how I miss Sanibel!

Pam,
I had no idea that sea stars could be so active. Thank you for sharing this! I love all the new things I learn from you!
When I see Starfish on the beach at low tide I have been picking them up and putting them back in the Gulf? Is this the right thing to do, I never know?? I don’t want to hurt them so hopefully i am helping??
could you post some of the video your husband took in Belize? And I was wondering, why you don’t have some kind of forked rake to get to the shells that don’t just sit right on the top. Thanks for the Starfish Video!
