Mother Nature must have known that cat lovers “knead” Sanibel Island so she made KITTENS PAWS plentiful on our beaches. Or maybe it’s the other way around? Kitty lovers love Sanibel since its the purrrfect place to curl up on the beach to enjoy so many KITTENS PAWS Mother Nature has given us. Either way, KITTENS PAWS may be one of the most common shells that “litter” the beaches on Sanibel but we think they are Meeeowvalous!
You might recall we adopted a new orange fur-baby last December who didn’t want to stick with the name “Rustie” that we chose for him for the first 2 months. So now after 8 months of kitty love and entertainment (and has the cutest little Kitten Paws), his permanent name is “PuppyCat”. He’s a kitty that thinks he’s a puppy! This Sanibel kitty wags his tail and he does tricks for treats every afternoon. Yup… he really puts on a show! Wanna see?
Introducing PuppyCat in… The PuppyCat Show!
PURE PAWSITIVITY !!
Heehee
Oh what a cutie! Should have trained my cats for treats!
I have a question regarding the most beautiful lightening welk I found today. Its REALLY stinky. Does that mean there’s something dead inside? Any suggestions to get rid of the smell? Thx!!!
O don’t want to leave it behind it’s just so perfect!
There is most likely part of the dead whelk still inside the shell beyond where you can see it. To be honest, you may actually not be able to get all of the stinky (rotting) animal parts out; it’s not at all easy to do that, and there is no foolproof way.
You could try to loosen and partly dissolve the dead tissues using a fairly strong bleach and water mix. After soaking for a day or two, then pour out the mix and flush hard but carefully (mind your eyes! use safety glasses or similar) with a strong pressure of fresh water through a narrow and angled nozzle, shaking well as you do it, and hoping that you see pieces of tissue come out. And then repeat soak and flush until there is no stinky stuff left inside. The problem is, that you may think you have got it all out, but some may remain and start to stink again after a few days.
Thanks so much Susan. Unfortunately we won’t be here (on sanibel) long enough to try your suggestions. Darn and it’s really such a beautiful welk… :-( I’ll place it at the beach at my hotel in hopes of someone else having the time. Boy oh boy is that a nasty smell. Yikes
Amy- sorry it took me so long to respond! Ive got an idea that I’ve heard before but never had to try but sounds like it would work… since there is just some sort of flesh or something way up inside the shell and there is no living animal in there heres what to do….
Buy kitty litter and a freezer ziplock bag big enough for your whelk. Pour kitty litter inside your whelk then put it in the ziplock then fill the rest around the whelk with kitty litter. I would actually then put then ziplock in another plastic bag and tie it up. The kitty litter will take care of the smell long enough for you to get it home. Then when you get home let it soak in bleach water solution for a day. After a day take it out and blast the inside of the shell with your power hose outside on the strongest stream setting. let it dry out then smell it again. if there is still a smell repeat the whole thing again and keep blasting a water stream inside the shell (and yes, wear sunglasses or some type of protection on your eyes like susan mentioned). Good luck!!!
(weird that its this post about kitties you asked about! kitty litter!!! hahaha)
Thx so much for the Kitty litter idea! We just got back from the Caya Costa (so?) Shelling cruise & someone on the cruise said she did the very same thing with Kitty litter!!! I’ll try it! Also Palm we’ve brought you a little present from steamboat springs Colorado in hopes of running into you on the beach. Is there somewhere we can leave it? We’re staying at island inn until Saturday. Thx!!!
Omigosh, Amy, thats so sweet! As a matter of fact, I’ll be running by Island Inn prob on Friday so I hope to run in to you!
Friday is great! I’ll leave at front desk just in case but if you’re at the beach my cap is light purple with the Colorado Rockies logo (CR). I’ll look for you!
just wondering if you’ve had a chance to stop by the Island Inn for your present!!!
I have read somewhere to bury it the ground where the ants and bugs can get it, and hopefully they will eat the ‘meat’! Has anyone else heard this? Actually, I have a shell buried on Sanibel outside the condo we rent. I am digging it up when we go back in February. Time will tell!!!
I have heard that “ants” suggestion, but I think it probably only works well in a full tropical setting. I was told that in the US, raccoons will dig up something that is stinky, even if you can’t smell it, so you have to put raccoon-proof wire over the top of the ground where it is buried. So they say anyway. Do let us know if you find the shell you buried in February!
Appreciate everyone’s feedback!!! I live in the mountains of Colorado and we don’t have many bugs. Plus it’s getting chilly already and any bugs we may have had are starting to die.
Leave it out for a few weeks. The flies (I know, gross) will have at it and you’ll be stink free.
leave some kitten paws for January and take care of the puppycat–R.G.
Love your video! Years ago we had a cat that would roll over on the sidewalk. After saying roll over a few times he started to roll over on command (but of course cats are independant). Unfortunately I don’t have any videos. Cats do have different personalities. Enjoy your kitties. Pat
I think the background barker should have rec’d some love in the credits.
I love kitten paws!
Miaow!
As a fellow cat lover and mommy to 2 cats & 1 kitten, I LOVE your PuppyCat! What a smart kitty he is! And one of my favorite shells to collect is Kittens Paws.
Oh my…what a sweet PuppyCat! We have a kitty that thinks he’s a puppy too and we call him “Pup”. He does tricks as well….but your PuppyCat takes the show!!
Love the video…and all of your shelltastic posts…thank you!!!
I’m seriously calling a meeting with my six cats….we have work to do!!!
Pam, I love PuppyCat! I’m lucky my cat allows me the privilege of petting her, never mind doing tricks for me!
Amy, a few years ago, it was the night before our last day on Sanibel, so I did a little evening shelling. I got back to the room and packed up all my shells and put them in my carry-on. We got on the plane an noticed an unpleasant odor, but paid no attention. Upon landing, we opened the overhead and realized it was coming from there. We thought “wow, someone’s got some really nasty laundry.” We got home and opened the carry-on and almost fell over! I had inadvertently picked up a shell that still had something inside! Ugh! This may sound gross, but I left it outside for a few weeks and the bugs ate up whatever was in there and then left. I soaked it in a bleach solution and voila! Stink gone and I was left with my beautiful shell!
hahah Lisa, our little Dustball is the same way… we feel privileged when she sits in our lap and lets us love on her- she would never “stoop” to doing tricks for food. She puts her nose up to most of the food we prepare for her but she is the sweetest most beautiful girl in the world!!!!!
Pam and Clark
